A busy summer of transfer action in La Liga has seen James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos arrive at Real Madrid while eternal rivals Atleti have lost Diego Cost and Felipe Luis to Chelsea.

Antoine Griezmann and Mario Mandzukic may have arrived at Vicente Calderon but home advantage and the marker put down by Real’s confident 2-0 win over Sevilla in the Super Cup means Los Blancos are the team to back on home soil.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team are 11/20 for victory on the night with the draw priced at 16/5 and an Atleti win available at a distant 9/2.

Ahead of the big game we’ve had a close look at the form book and history between these two sides to bring you the three best bets to back.

Result after 15 minutes – Real Madrid @ 13/4

Los Blancos put in an impressive display in the Super Cup last week and were unlucky not to take the lead even earlier than they did. It should be a different story against Atleti, however, with Real taking the lead within the opening 15 minutes in two of their last three meetings.

Having gone in front in the first 15 minutes of their most recent friendly with Fiorentina, odds of 13/4 on Ronaldo, Bale, Rodriguez and the rest getting past a much-changed Atletico side are too good to miss.

Real Madrid (-1) to beat Atletico Madrid @ 13/10

Diego Simeone’s charges may have got the better of Real in the title race last term but they remain a fragile force against Los Blancos at the Bernabeu, losing on six of their last seven trips to the ground.

Real inflicted a 3-0 defeat on Atleti when the teams last met at the ground in last season’s Copa del Rey in what was the fifth time in a row that the Los Merengues have beaten Atleti by a margin of two goals or more. We are backing a repeat here.

Real Madrid to score a penalty @ 9/2

Madrid derbies can often be fractious with tackles flying in, players falling over and imaginary cards waved aplenty. Atleti have developed a nasty habit for conceding penalties to their old rivals too with three given away in their last three meetings with Real.

On each occasion Cristiano Ronaldo has duly dispatched the resulting spot-kick and, given that track record, it could pay to back the former Manchester United man to do the same here.
