Sergio Aguero may have recently signed a new contract with Atletico Madrid, but his decision to do so could have been motivated by it potentially enhancing his chances to secure a move away from the Vicente Calderon.

Chelsea and Manchester United had previously shown an interest in the Argentine striker, alongside Italian giants Inter Milan, but all were put off making a bid by the size of the minimum fee release clause in Aguero’s contract.

However, the 22-year-old has managed to trim this value from £51m to £38m in his new deal, which is similar to the figure that clubs were supposedly happy to pay ahead of the start of the season.

There is also no reason to suggest that Aguero’s worth would have diminished in any way as he has netted seven times for Atletico Madrid in La Liga this season.

The news could prove especially useful to Chelsea as they have the money to complete the deal and are desperately short of strikers to battle for a starting spot with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka.

But Aguero is likely to remain a key component of Atletico Madrid’s side in the immediate future and their next La Liga game is away at Hercules.

Atletico are 11/8 to beat Hercules in the football betting odds and come into the game on a five-game unbeaten streak in all competitions.

Hercules have been awful travellers of late, but have been dominant on their own patch with three successive home victories.

It is 2/1 that Hercules beat Atletico Madrid for the first time in the third ever meeting between the pair, while a draw can be backed at 9/4.

A £10 bet on Atletico Madrid beating Hercules 2-0 could lead to a return of £80. New Ladbrokes customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
