Philippe Mexes has revealed that he is considering leaving Roma on a free transfer if he is not assured of more first-team playing time.
Mexes spent most of last season on the bench at Roma after being replaced by loan arrival Nicolas Burdisso and the Argentine has now signed permanently from defending Serie A champions Inter Milan.
Roma finished two points behind Inter last season in second spot and are 5/1 to go one better during this campaign and win Serie A for the first time since 2001.
However, they failed to get off to the best start when being held to a goalless draw at home by Cesena in their opening game, who were promoted from Serie B last season when finishing runners-up.
Mexes played the 90 minutes in the draw, but has revealed that he is not guaranteed to sign a new contract if one is placed in front of him before his present deal expires next year.
He said: ”Burdisso came back to Roma and it’s obvious the competition has increased again.
“I risk playing little and my contract will expire. I am seriously considering whether to renew it or not. If I don’t find space in the first half of the season then I may decide against renewing it.”
If Roma are to challenge for the title then they may require one of their strikers to be firing on all cylinders in attack.
Mirko Vucinic is 14/1 to finish as the top scorer in Serie A this season, while Francesco Totti is also 14/1 and new recruit from AC Milan Marco Borriello is 20/1.
Inter are the 11/10 favourites to win Serie A despite also being held to a 0-0 draw on the opening day of the season at Bologna. See the complete Serie A winners market.
