It’s been a hectic few weeks over in Spain, with two of La Liga’s big-boys struggling to get going and a handful of underdogs challenging the big three for top-spot in the table. But finally, things are beginning to take shape in the league.
In case you’ve struggled to keep up with proceedings, Ladbrokes News have picked out some of the biggest talking points from the opening 10 weeks of the season, starting with a team of giants who’ve been rumbled on more than one occasion.
Barcelona ARE human, after all
10 games in, and Barcelona have already dropped eight points in the league, including remarkable defeats to Alaves (2-1) and Celta Vigo (4-3). While they’ve never had a problem going forward, their first few performances have proved they’re certainly beatable. Manchester City’s victory over the Catalans only emphasises this further.
WARNING – Score against Atletico Madrid at your peril
There’s a reason Atletico keep so many clean sheets. It’s because when they do concede, they generally run riot. Just ask Granada, who dared to find the net in the 18th minute at the Vicente Calderon. The final score in that game? 7-1 to Diego Simeone’s men.
Real Madrid preparing for life after CR7
All good things must come to an end, and it looks as though Zinedine Zidane understands that Los Blancos can’t rely on Ronaldo forever. But the future still looks bright for Madrid, who’ve recently tied Gareth Bale down for another six years. And of their 28 league goals so far this season, Ronaldo has only scored five.
Don’t underestimate the so-called ‘minnows’
Alaves and Leganes supporters will be delighted with their side’s starts to the campaign, with both teams taking points from the likes of Atletico and Barcelona respectively. The pair sit alongside each other in 15th and 16th-place. Not bad for two sides who were considered to have no chance of staying in the division.
Leicester City have set an example
Real, Atletico and Barcelona have dominated this league in recent years, but this has been one of the closest openings to a La Liga campaign that we’ve seen in a long time. Just five points separate a top five which includes a Sevilla side who were neck and neck with Zidane’s men until last weekend and a Villarreal team who tasted defeat for just the first time on Sunday away at Eibar.
Our advice for the rest of the season from a punting perspective?
It’s fairly simple: never rule out an upset at Camp Nou, keep backing Atletico in the clean sheet market, don’t just look at Ronaldo when backing anytime Real scorers, keep an eye on the form of the smaller sides and take your pick between Sevilla and Villarreal to finish in the top four.
