Stuttgart have dismissed manager Christian Gross after less than a year in charge.

Having only picked up one win from their first seven games of the season, leaking 15 goals in the process, the club are bottom of the Bundesliga.

A statement was released by the German club on Wednesday stating: “After a detailed analysis of the playing situation, Christian Gross has been released from his duty as head coach of Stuttgart with immediate effect.”

Gross took over in December 2009 and took Stuttgart to sixth in the Bundesliga.

But despite a thumping 7-0 win over Borussia Monchengladbach, they’ve lost every other one of their games, including a 4-1 humiliation by Bayer Leverkusen at home.

Though Gross’s dismissal would seem justified in the face of Stuttgart’s poor start, it comes just a week after sporting director Fredi Bobic said the Swiss manager had his full support.

“Sacking the trainer?” said Bobic. “Such words are nonsense, for me there are no question marks over the coach.

“It is also absolute rubbish that we have a bad working relationship.

“No, we have clear goals and we have them with Christian Gross as coach.”

Assistant coach Jens Keller has been put in charge of the team as they prepare for a crunch game with fellow under achievers Schalke 04 that Stuttgart are 12/5 to win.

Schalke have had just as poor a start to the season as Stuttgart, but have one more Bundesliga point than their Saturday opponents.

This is in spite of a series of big name summer signings, including Raul, Klass-Jan Huntelaar and Christoph Metzelder.

Both teams desperately need a win, but Schalke have home advantage and are priced at 10/11 to beat Stuttgart.

Both started the season as outside tips for the title, but Schalke have fallen to 28/1 and Stuttgart to 100/1.

They will both need to turn things around quickly if they are to avoid a relegation scrap.

It’s 9/4 for Stuttgart and Schalke to draw this weekend. See the full Bundesliga betting odds market here.
