Franz Beckenbauer believes that Bayern Munich are already too far off the pace in the Bundesliga table to be crowned champions this season.

Munich found themselves at 1/2 to win the Bundesliga under a fortnight ago, but successive defeats against Mainz and Borussia Dortmund has seen this price drift to 6/4.

This run has seen them slip to 12th in the Bundesliga standings, collecting just eight points from their opening seven games.

Munich are now 13 points adrift of current leaders Mainz, who have won all of their seven games, and Bayern honorary president Beckenbauer feels that this gap has become too large to peg back.

He said: “It is an incredible deficit which is practically impossible to make up. You cannot expect Bayern to put a winning streak together in this condition.”

Bayern seem to be particularly struggling without the selection of inspirational wingers Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, who have both been ruled out with injury.

Furthermore, the disappointing form of the team has resulted in them missing their traditional annual visit to the Oktoberfest beer festival.

Manager Louis van Gaal has instead scheduled an extra training session in a bid to reverse the team’s fortunes and bring about a change in form.

The club can use the two-week international break to sort themselves out and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge feels that nothing less than a win will be acceptable from their first game back at home to Hannover.
