With only a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg at Anfield, Liverpool will be without Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres as they bid to avoid a humiliating early exit in the UEFA Europa League.
After Javier Mascherano’s no show for Liverpool’s league game on Monday, Hodgson has left him out of the squad whilst he resolves the Argentine’s future – the Liverpool boss will also be without the services of Daniel Agger because of concussion, and Maxi Rodriguez who has gastroenteritis.
Liverpool’s recent record in Turkey is far from impressive with defeats to Besiktas in 2007 and Galatasaray in 2006 and Trabzonspor are excellent value at 4/1 to overturn the deficit and qualify for the next stage of the competition.
Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has admitted to prioritising the Premier League over the European competition but does admit that Liverpool should’ve killed off the tie in the first leg.
“We missed a golden opportunity to kill off the game at Anfield and now we’ve got it all to do.” said Hodgson.
“It’s going to be a very tough ask for the players in a difficult place. They are one of the two or three best teams in Turkey at the moment and Turkish football is of a very high standard.”
Torres’ injury problems have allowed David N’Gog a decent run in the side and he will be looking to impress his new manager after his poor showing at Manchester City on Monday – he is 6/1 to score first.
