Tottenham Hotspur make for an interesting barometer of form as far as Liverpool’s upcoming clash with Borussia Dortmund is concerned.

Naturally, Jurgen Klopp’s return to his former home will be an overwhelming narrative for the game, but the manager’s reunion with his former employers doesn’t play much part in finding a winner.

Instead, recent battles with Mauricio Pochettino’s side can provide a good guide as to who is best placed to prevail.

Spurs sit as the second-best side in England, as far as the current Premier League table is concerned, and both the Germans and Merseysiders have crossed their path in a short space of time.

Thomas Tuchel’s men booked their date against Liverpool by demolishing the north Londoners over two legs in the previous round, while Klopp’s new side have held the Lilywhites to a pair of draws in their two league meetings.

Known as stubborn defenders under the Argentine coach, Spurs shipped five goals across their two games with Die Borussen, who ripped Pochettino’s backline apart at home in the first encounter.

In the league, Liverpool managed just the solitary strike against Tottenham – coming from the boot of Philippe Coutinho at Anfield on Saturday.

All three teams play a similar brand of pressing football and while that promises to provide spectators with a high-octane spectacle – like the recent Liverpool-Spurs encounter was – that doesn’t bode well for Liverpool.

Dortmund’s demolition of the White Hart Lane club, and Liverpool’s failure to do so using much of the same strategy, indicates that Klopp’s men may struggle to overcome the considerable hurdle that the German club present.

Ladbrokes make Dortmund the 8/5 favourites to lift the competition’s trophy this term and it is difficult to see them faltering in their European charge against the Reds.
