Manchester City may be the favourites to win the Europa League this season but may face a challenge to emerge from Group A if Red Bull Salzburg can reproduce their exploits from the group stages 12 months ago.
The Austrians won all six of their group outings last season, despite having Villarreal and Lazio to contend with, but were eliminated at the last 32 stage by Standard Liege 3-2 on aggregate.
They also only conceded one goal in their three home ties in the group and are 5/1 to beat Manchester City and claim the three points, while 12/1 is available for them to finish as group winners again.
For Roberto Mancini’s men, it will be a first showdown with Austrian opposition in a UEFA club competition and they approach the game having won their last three European games.
This includes an away win against FC Timisoara in this year’s Europa League play-off round, which ended a sequence of four European away games without a victory.
City are 8/11 to top Group A and 6/10 to beat Salzburg.
The other game in the group pits another of the competition’s big guns in Juventus at home to Lech Poznan where they will be out to extend their fine record against Polish opposition in European competition.
They are unbeaten in seven games against Polish sides, which includes six victories.
Luigi Del Neri’s team are 2/9 to kick off their Group A campaign with a victory and will be hoping to take advantage of Lech’s inability to find the net in European outings on a regular basis.
Lech have scored just seven times in their last eight European games, but did beat FC Dnipro in their last game on their travels 1-0.
