Whoever will be presiding over Manchester United’s transfer dealings this summer will have some massive decisions to make on the extent of the purge, especially where two of their biggest names are concerned.
Robin van Persie and Nani are reportedly both firmly on the radar of Juventus, as the Italian club look to mould a squad capable of producing a much longer run in the Champions League next season.
As it stands, Juve are the 21/20 favourites to win this season’s Europa League ahead of the semi finals, though it’s not a competition the Serie A champions are satisfied with being in.
But, as is so often the case in potential transfer transactions, a big player being sold is vital for a club to secure the requisite finances to land other targets.
Gareth Bale’s mammoth transfer fee was responsible for a concentrated recruitment drive at Tottenham last summer, while the latest reports suggest Juventus could be about to bank £60m for Paul Pogba, who is heavily linked to Paris St-Germain.
And with this huge pot to play with it’s believed that Juve will take advantage of the upheaval at Old Trafford and come in with sizeable offers for RVP and Portuguese winger Nani.
Both players have excelled for United in the past, not least Van Persie whose 26 Premier League goals in his debut season helped the Red Devils march to the 2012/13 title, but in line with the club as a whole, they’ve suffered sliding fortunes this season.
Although the Dutch striker has still managed an impressive goals-to-games return, he’s been plagued by niggling injuries and has often been linked with a move away.
At 30-years-old it’s probably the last time United will earn a big payday on the centre-forward this summer.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Nani – a former player-of-the-season at United – has been reduced to just 12 appearances in all competitions this season and is almost certain to move on.
