The Republic of Ireland’s dwindling hopes of reaching the Euro 2016 finals in France next year would be given a huge boost with a win over Germany at the Aviva Stadium.
Martin O’Neill’s side face a daunting task, however, having failed to beat Die Mannschaft in each of the last six meetings between the two.
The hosts go into the tie as 11/2 outsiders, with the draw on at 10/3 and a win for Germany priced up at 1/2 and while those hoping to see as many home nations as possible reach the finals may be tempted to back an upset the stats do not support such action.
The Irish may be unbeaten in their last five games, but while draws with Poland, England and Scotland were credible, the 4-0 and 1-0 wins over Gibraltar and Georgia respectively are scant preparation to face the reigning world champions.
As such, those looking to make some money from the tie could be persuaded to look at past meetings for inspiration.
For instance, John O’Shea’s 90th minute equaliser when the sides met back in 2014 means that the Emerald Isle’s last three goals against Germany have all come in the final minute of games.
Therefore, the 2/1 on Ireland to score the last goal could certainly tempt, while the 66/1 on O’Shea netting the last strike of the game is surely worth a small stake.
It is also worth noting that Germany have scored 10 goals in their last three games against Ireland and 16 in their last five against all opposition.
With this in mind the 4/1 on over 3.5 Germany goals could prove a shrewd option, while the 13/8 on over 2.5 should certainly see a return.
Ireland, though will pin their hopes on record goal scorer Robbie Keane, who plays despite welcoming a new child into the world this week.
The LA Galaxy man was the butt of a breastfeeding joke from assistant manager Roy Keane but the former Tottenham striker could make a t*t out of his namesake yet, with an anytime goal at 12/5.
