An impressive showing against Holland on Sunday has led to punter support for Portugal at Euro 2012, and in turn their captain Cristiano Ronaldo is now joint-second favourite for the Golden Boot at 4/1.

Ronaldo, who was guilty of wasting a host of chances in Portugal’s second group outing with Denmark, proved his true worth to the side at the weekend, as he led them to victory.

His brace in that match represented his first goals of the tournament, and now only Germany’s Mario Gomez, and Alan Dzagoev of already-eliminated Russia have notched more times than him in Poland and Ukraine.

Each of those players has three goals to their name, and the fact that two of Dzagoev’s strikes came against Czech Republic will give confidence to punters backing Ronaldo to be top tournament scorer.

This is due to the fact that his Portugal side will meet the Czechs in the quarter-final, in a tie where the captain will be eager to once again inspire his side to victory.

The Czechs’ shakiness in defence has been underlined by the five goals they have conceded in just three matches, and any generosity from their backline will likely be seized upon by Ronaldo on Thursday.

A haul of 60 goals in just 55 club appearances over the past season will instill further confidence in Ronaldo backers, particularly with his double against Holland going some way to dispelling rumours he does not perform to his best at international level.

Also heavily relied upon as captain of his nation, the skipper’s free-kick and penalty duties mean that he is likely to have as many scoring opportunities as anyone in the tournament.

Ronaldo has competed at two European championships in the past, scoring three times at Euro 2004 and 2008 respectively, but now at the peak of his career, he looks good to better that tally in this tournament alone.

He could prove a worthy investment at 4/1 to top score in Poland and Ukraine.
