Manchester United’s new era under coach Louis van Gaal has started with a pair of dreadful Premier League performances at home to Swansea and away to Sunderland, and a tepid draw against the latter leaves the Red Devils on one solitary point.

With a spate of United injuries and little actual movement in the transfer market, League One challengers MK Dons must relish hosting England’s most successful club in the second round of the Capital One Cup.

Here are our three best bets for the Stadium MK clash.

MK Dons double chance @ 2/1

The 13-time Premier League champions aren’t likely to get much better any time soon, with Chris Smalling’s injury meaning Van Gaal is now shorn of eight players, although centre-half Marcos Rojo could come in for his debut after moving from Sporting Lisbon last week.

Whether the Argentina World Cup finalist is ready for a rainy night in Buckinghamshire is unclear though, and Karl Robinson’s men have started the season well enough to go into the biggest game of their lives with plenty of confidence.

The Dons are three points behind surprise League One leaders Fleetwood, having won two, drawn one and lost one of their four games, with only Barnsley outscoring their seven goals in the third tier thus far.

Kyle McFadzean to score at any time @ 12/1

Robinson’s tactics have clearly benefited new signing McFadzean, the defender who notched in each of MK Dons’ first two fixtures of the season, against Gillingham in the league and AFC Wimbledon in the first round of this competition.

McFadzean’s form is clearly no flash in the pan, as the 27-year-old managed nine goals in four campaigns with Crawley, so his double-digit price practically begs to be punted on here.

Both teams to score @ 3/4

MK Dons’ 0-0 draw with Coventry last time out was the first game in eight, stretching back to last season, which Robinson’s men failed to hit the mark in.

With both of United’s competitive fixtures so far under Van Gaal seeing both sides bag, this bet looks sure to land at indicatively short odds.
