This summer has been one of confusion and a lack of clarity at Chelsea.
The fans have seen their billionaire owner refused entry back into the UK and their new stadium plans shelved indefinitely
Antonio Conte is stuck in limbo and there’s no sign of Maurizio Sarri in the corridors of Chelsea Cobham Training Complex yet.
The fans are understandably restless and with talk of some of their high-profile players on the move, they need a safe pair of hands to see them through.
There have been murmurings that goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois could leave which may trigger a domino effect around Europe.
Roma’s Allisson had been mentioned but it now appears Kasper Schmeichel tops the wanted list.
The 31-year-old began his career at Manchester City but has had to do things the hard way since then.
A number of loan moves led him to signing for League Two Notts County. He only conceded 0.67 goals per match in his single season at Meadow Lane.
A brief spell at Leeds United followed before joining Leicester City in 2011.
He has gone from strength to strength since then. Which culminated in a Premier League winner’s medal in 2015-16 and a Champions League last-8 appearance a year later.
However, it may be his heroics for Denmark in this summer’s World Cup that has turned Chelsea’s head.
Schmeichel would certainly fill the void of being a big, commanding presence between the sticks.
He has a loud personality on the pitch, Premier League experience and is a proven winner.
The Foxes only have Eldin Jakupovic as backup so may demand in excess of £30 million for Schmeichel .
As the transfer market shuts early this summer, Chelsea are in danger of getting left behind.
But a goalkeeper of the Dane’s stature would be a solid base.
