Cardiff have received a boost in their bid to secure promotion to the Premier League this season as Peter Whittingham has signed a new contract at the club.

Whittingham was Cardiff’s and the Championship’s top scorer last season with 22 league goals as they lost in the play-off final to Blackpool and this was despite him functioning in midfield.

He has agreed a two-year deal to remain at the Welsh outfit until the summer of 2013 and he is now ready to focus on ensuring they are playing Premier League football next season.

Cardiff have begun this campaign in decent fashion to sit second in the table with 20 points from their opening ten games and this has left them 4/1 to win the Championship this season.

The Bluebirds have managed 16 goals in these fixtures, but somewhat surprisingly Whittingham is still to find the target.

He has not been helped by the fact that he has missed two recent penalties and manager Dave Jones has further hindered his chances of finding the target by relieving him of spot-kick duties.

Jones admits that a goal would do wonders for Whittingham’s confidence and he has drifted to a big 50/1 to be the Championship’s top scorer this season.

Summer signing Craig Bellamy is likely to take over penalty duties and this could help increase the number of goals he ends the campaign with.

Bellamy has two Championship goals so far and is 9/1, alongside Cardiff strike partner Jay Bothroyd, to top the scoring charts in the division come May.

Cardiff host Bristol City next in the Championship and Whittingham did score on the last occasion that the two met in January.

QPR are the 5/4 favourites to win the Championship and currently top the table by six points. See the whole Championship winners betting odds market.
