He may not be the most popular of choices with some Leeds United supporters, but Neil Warnock’s appointment as boss could be the best thing to happen to their Championship promotion bid.

They are currently 80/1 to win the Championship which looks well beyond them but, with Leeds just six points off the play-off places, a push for promotion via that route looks attainable for a manager with a brilliant record in the second tier of English football.

He’s won promotion with Sheffield United and last season guided Queens Park Rangers to the title in convincing fashion – and it’s a record that Leeds Chairman Ken Bates feels will benefit his club.

Bates said: “We believe the appointment is arguably the most important we have made. The objective was to appoint a manager who had for a proven track record of getting teams promoted and in Neil we have a man whose record is second to none.

“We want to be in the Premier League and we will support Neil in the quest to get us there.”

Warnock had been linked with a host of other jobs but believes Leeds is the perfect platform for him to rebuild a reputation that was slightly damaged by his failure to cement QPR’s place in the Premier League.

Warnock said: “I feel I have one big challenge left in me and believe Leeds is a club that should be in the Premier League. I want to be the man who is able to deliver this for a set of fans who never cease to amaze me with their numbers and their loyalty.”

He will have his work cut out to win over some supporters who still feel Simon Grayson was harshly treated but, if he can get off to a strong start, then we could be seeing Leeds United back in the Premier League sooner rather than later.
