Third time unlucky for relegation contending Tykes

After finishing 21st for the last two seasons in the Championship, Barnsley are in for another relegation survival fight this time around.

The Tykes are 5/2 to be relegated to League One in May after surviving by a solitary point at the end of last season as Peterborough went down instead.

A year before that and Barnsley survived by a comparatively huge margin of eight points, again on the cusp of relegation in 21st as Portsmouth filled the final drop zone place.

The past couple of campaigns have seen troubled sides such as Wolves and Portsmouth plummet through the leagues and in turn give Barnsley a little bit of salvation in their survival quest.

But this season sees three strong sides come down from the top tier, with QPR, Reading and Wigan all looking up the table rather than down it.

Meanwhile Bournemouth, Yeovil and Doncaster have been promoted and will take heart from the fact that all the promoted sides stayed up last season with Charlton, Huddersfield, Sheffield Wednesday all securing safety for another year.

There is plenty to reason that all three of those sides can adapt to Championship football, and as such, this all means the year ahead boasts 24 very competitive clubs, and that’s bad news for David Flitcroft’s boys.

Fellow Yorkshire side Huddersfield may be another club in trouble this year, and are 3/1 to go down.

Mark Robins’ side needed two wins from their final three matches at the end of last year to stay up, and have struggled to replace the goals of Jordan Rhodes since his £8m move to Blackburn last summer.

Millwall suffered a dismal second half to the year as promotion hopes faded into relegation worries and the London outfit are 3/1 for the drop.

The departure of Kenny Jackett over the summer after six years in charge deprives Millwall of stability they have long become used to, and new boss Steve Lomas has never managed in this trickiest of divisions before.
