Both Southampton and Leeds United have suffered falls from grace but this is the season that many expect them to challenge to regain their place in the top tier.
Saturday’s evening kick-off will be televised on Sky Sports and there is plenty to look forward too as these two former Premier League favourites go head-to-head on the opening weekend of the season.
Despite being the favourites for the League One title for much of the season last year, Southampton failed to justify their odds, eventually finishing second to Brighton.
This season there remains plenty of optimism and hype around the Southampton charge back to the Premier League but, as per usual, they are set for an upset on the opening day of the season.
Only once in their last 22 opening matches have Southampton managed to take all three points and considering the two teams haven’t shared the spoils in their last 11 encounters, the 2/1 for Leeds to win is very tempting value.
Neither team has been very active in the transfer market and that will disappoint the Leeds fans who just missed out on a play-off spot last season, but Leeds were the sixth strongest team away from home in the division last season and that will count for them against Southampton.
Having jumped a division you would expect Southampton to have improved the team significantly but just St Mary’s has witnessed just two arrivals through the doors and Southampton may not be as strong as many prediction charts as guessing.
The last time these two met on the opening day of the season Leeds won 2-0 at Elland Road and until defeat to Derby on the opening day of last season, Leeds had gone 20 opening day games without defeat.
The last seven clashes have been settled by the odd goal so we fancy a 1-0 Leeds win at 9/1.
