Having burst onto the scene with two goals on his Manchester United debut back in 2014, there were high expectations for James Wilson.
However, after injury and a dearth of gametime, the player needs to kick-start his career. And that could happen at Reading.
Royals boss Jaap Stam is reportedly lining up a January bid to sign the 21-year-old striker, with Transfermarkt.co.uk placing the forward’s value at £1.8m.
Wilson has some pedigree at Championship level, having netted five times during a six-month stint with Brighton & Hove Albion in 2015-16. However, injury and a lack of opportunities at Old Trafford mean the player is something of an unknown quantity right now.
A cruciate injury sidelined the Biddulph native for much of the 2016-17 season. And despite a few run of games in Premier League 2 for United’s Under-23 side this term, the player reportedly wants to leave for a solid shot at first-team football in January.
For the Royals’ part, they’re struggling for goals this term. The Berkshire club have managed just 10 goals in 11 Championship games, so attacking reinforcements are definitely needed at the Madejski Stadium.
This could well prove to be a smart move for both parties if a deal is struck in January.
The current Reading squad head to Bramall Lane this Saturday, with 29/10 for the Royals to take all three points against high-flying Sheffield United.
