No Championship club can afford to turn their nose up at a proven goalscorer and those currently looking to boost their attacking options should look no further than DJ Campbell.
The former Blackburn, QPR and Blackpool striker is currently plying his trade for non-league Maidenhead United after not being approached by a Football League club in the summer.
Many have speculated that the player’s wage demands have seen him into his current predicament but the humbling experience of playing in the Vanarama Conference South should have him chomping at the bit for Championship football, regardless of the salary on offer.
Here Ladbrokes News looks at three clubs that could benefit from taking a punt on 32-year-old front man.
Ipswich @ 12/1
Ipswich are flying high in the Championship at present – sitting in sixth and just two points off the lead – but Campbell’s relationship with manager Mick McCarthy could make this a possible move.
The Tractor Boys have netted 16 goals so far, with Daryl Murphy leading the way with six strikes. David McGoldrick has chipped in with three but the fact he is joint second with defender Christophe Berra means competition for places could aid a promotion push.
Campbell netted 10 times in 17 league outings while on loan at Portman Road in 2012-13 and would be a welcome addition to the current squad.
Millwall @ 10/1
Like his Ipswich counterpart, Millwall manager Ian Holloway has got the best out of Campbell in the past when he smashed nine goals in 20 Championship games for Blackpool in 2009.
The Lions currently have eight strikers on their books but they have returned a measly four goals between them so far, leaving defender Mark Beevers the club’s top scorer with two.
The likes of Jermaine Easter, Ricardo Fuller, Aiden O’Brien and Mathias Ranegie are yet to net and would find their places under threat should Ollie opt for a reunion with London-born Campbell.
Bolton @ 14/1
With the Trotters rock bottom of the league with five points and just eight goals from 11 games new manager Neil Lennon has his work cut out.
There are currently nine forwards on the books at the Macron Stadium but seven of those are under 23, of whom only Joe Mason has impressed with four goals.
The senior strikers in the squad, Jermaine Beckford and Craig Davies, have underperformed to such an extent they have mustered just a goal between them from a combined 19 appearances!
Is it time for Bolton to start dancing to DJ’s tune?
