Betting on who will fill a managerial vacancy is always an entertaining experience. The fun starts with the initial news of any sacking, upon which an early favourite is inexplicably placed at the head of the betting.

Once that man inevitably rules himself out of the running the game really is afoot, as gambles on a host of outsiders wrongly throw out-of-work bosses into the spotlight.

A good few days of revelry can really be had just monitoring the market moves, and that’s before you’ve even played the what-price-is-Alan-Curbishley guessing game.

At the current stage of Leeds’ search for a new boss, Robbie Fowler is a popular betting choice after it was revealed the former Whites striker had applied to take over at Elland Road.

Liverpool’s famed front-man is currently 14/1 to get the gig according to Ladbrokes, with Paolo Di Canio thought to be leading the race to the dugout.

With little managerial experience to call on Fowler’s decision to go for the job is a little strange, while the failed experiment with axed Whites boss David Hockaday – a man with a similar lack of management know-how – may work against him.

Liverpool’s modern day managerial production line doesn’t work in Fowler’s favour either, with arguably only Sami Hyypia performing respectably on the touchlines from a crop of failures including John Barnes, Paul Ince and Steve Staunton.

Having worked predominantly as a coach since hanging up his boots in 2012, Fowler has held ad-hoc and temporary positions with MK Dons, Bury and the Liverpool Academy.

His one, brief, foray into management came with Thai side Muangthong United in the 2011/12 campaign when taking temporary charge following the sacking of Henrique Calisto.

In the 15 games the 39-year-old oversaw Fowler won seven and drew four in what is a respectable, if unremarkable record.
