As the recent sidekick of one of the modern era’s greatest managers, Paul Clement transitioned from Carlo Ancelotti’s assistant to first-time manager with heightened expectations placed on his shoulders.

It’s unclear whether Derby County, who gave the 43-year-old Londoner his first gig, were banking on Clement turning into a Championship-version of Carlo, but they’ve decided they aren’t willing to wait around and find out any longer.

The Rams sacked Clement in a statement that suggested the one-time Real Madrid deputy played dire football, bought poorly and failed to develop the young players at the squad.

With Derby sat in the play-off places, five points off automatic promotion, the move perplexed the opinionated world of Twitter. Here’s the best of the reaction:

Former Ram and current talking head Robbie Savage seemed embarrassed by the dismissal

Although he seemingly wasn’t as shocked by the news as Stewie Griffin

John Brewin painted a bleak picture for British coaching upstarts

It’s fair to say not everyone on the net was left flabbergasted though

The Championship is proving to be a managerial graveyard this season

A Twitter poll ran by Sky Sports’ Simon Thomas made it clear how most Rams felt

Clement had gone seven league games without a win, but appeared to believe his job was safe

Luckily for the ousted head coach, his former boss may have a use for him further down the line
