As the search for Steve Cotterill’s successor at Nottingham Forest continues, Roy Keane has seen support from punters to land the role, and as such has been trimmed to 6/1 for the position.

It was thought that Mick McCarthy had secured the vacancy yesterday, when his odds were slashed to as little as 1/12, but following talks with the club’s new Kuwait owners, the former Wolves boss withdrew from the reckoning.

Now somewhat ironically, the man McCarthy has had a bitter public dispute with in the past, Keane, is being seen as a potential candidate to succeed Cotterill at the City Ground.

Keane has been out of work since his sacking by Ipswich back in January 2011, but his agent Michael Kennedy has pointed out that he is ready to return to the game, and would be interested in taking charge at Forest.

Kennedy told Press Association Sport, “I can understand why people would link him with the job, being an old Forest player, but I don’t know if he is in the running for it. But what I can say is that I think Roy would be interested if he was approached.”

His managerial credentials include a Championship title with Sunderland during his debut season at the helm, and his past connections with Forest as a player would seem to make him a popular choice amongst many fans.

Indeed, Keane enjoyed a three-year stint with Forest in the infancy of his playing career, when performing under the infamous Brian Clough aided his development immensely, and prepared him to become a Manchester United legend upon leaving the City Ground.

Amongst his main competitors for the Forest job meanwhile, former England boss Glenn Hoddle is afforded 4/6 favouritism for the post, in what would be his first job for six years.

Peterborough’s Darren Ferguson, son of Keane’s former manager Sir Alex, is a 9/2 hope, whilst Billy Davies is a 6/1 chance to return to the club he led to back-to-back top six league finishes in recent years.
