Having taken five points from his first five league games in charge, it hasn’t been the greatest of starts for Steve McClaren as Nottingham Forest manager.

A lack of deadline day transfer activity at the club means McClaren has seen nine players leave and just five come in under his tenure, and it is believed the former England manager is considering his position.

Previous Forest manager Billy Davies had raised concerns about the way the board was running the club when he was in charge, but McClaren was confident he could use Forest as a springboard to get his managerial career back on track.

A strong spell in charge of Dutch club FC Twente saw McClaren regain some of that lost reputation following the daft ‘Wally with the Brolly’ episode, but a failed period at Wolfsburg saw very few willing to take a chance on McClaren

As England prepare to take on Bulgaria tonight in a game that could go a long way to deciding the fate of England’s qualifying campaign, Steve McClaren is on the verge of quitting a club he joined just three months ago.

It seemed the final straw was when the Forest board messed up a deal for Wolfsburg winger Ashkan Dejagah, a man McClaren was determined to bring in having worked with him in Germany.

Forest also missed out on former Leeds United winger Max Gradel and Wayne Routledge, and McClaren has had to sit back and watch while Sven Goran Eriksson has brought in £15m worth of players and Sam Allardyce has added 12 new players.

Andy Reid, Jonathan Greening, George Boateng, Matt Derbyshire and Ishmael Miller have all been signed this summer but Forest are as big as 33/1 to win the league while West Ham are the 2/1 favourites and Leicester the 6/1 second favourites.

Should McClaren decide to go, Forest’s price for Championship glory will lengthen and the Forest faithful should start preparing for another long season in the Championship.
