Cardiff City went second in the Championship last night on goal difference thanks to a much-needed win over Leeds United.
Entering the game, Dave Jones’ side had managed just two wins in their previous ten games and were rapidly losing touch with league leaders Queens Park Rangers.
But the home win over high-flying Leeds has put Cardiff’s promotion charge back on track and they are now 5/1 to win the Championship and are five points off QPR.
And having taken just 11 points from their last possible 33, Jones will be pleased that despite the poor results, his side are still in the mix at the top of the table.
QPR still command favouritism in the Championship betting market and are 10/11 to win the league as the Championship takes a break this weekend for the FA Cup.
Norwich and Swansea City join Cardiff on 43 points and will both sides will at least fancy their chances of gaining the second automatic promotion spot.
But with Norwich as big as 9/1 to win the league and Swansea longer at 12/1, the Championship betting odds suggest it’s a two horse race between Cardiff and QPR.
With 21 games left in the season, there is plenty of time for the top of the Championship to change, but QPR have the spending power to maintain their title challenge and it will be difficult for any of their opponents to stop them.
QPR’s trip to Premier League opposition Blackburn on Saturday is an intriguing one as it allows Neil Warnock to assess his side in top tier company.
Should QPR beat Blackburn on Saturday – they are 3/1 to do so – then Warnock’s side can be safe in the knowledge that should they win promotion, they will be able to compete with in the Premier League next season.
