After a March wobble, which saw Middlesbrough lose three successive away fixtures, Aitor Karanka’s men have regained their spark and are in a very healthy position in the Championship promotion race.

Last night’s 3-0 triumph over the Terriers saw on-loan striker Gaston Ramirez score twice, with the first of his strikes coming just a minute after Grant Leadbitter had opened the scoring with a well-taken penalty.

Perhaps the most satisfying factor for Karanka, though, will be Boro’s clean sheet.

The Spanish boss has put a huge emphasis on his side boasting the division’s meanest defence and they have now shut out two of their last three opponents – the other clean sheet coming in a 1-0 home victory against Hull.

With the Tigers suffering a 4-0 mauling at the hands of Derby County in yesterday’s fixtures, and Burnley, Boro, and Brighton all winning, the automatic promotion spots are increasingly looking like a three-horse race.

Boro currently lie in second spot, though they have a game in hand on most of the teams in the promotion pack, including the Clarets and the Seagulls.

With a winnable run of games ahead – including a trip to beleaguered Bolton Wanderers – Boro look set to avoid the play-off heartache of last season and secure their promotion in the coming weeks.

The Teesside club are 5/6 to finish the season as champions and 1/8 to win promotion to the promised land of the Premier League.

Lancashire club Burnley are 1/5 to be promoted, while on-form Brighton are evens.

Boro’s next assignment is a home game against an inconsistent Preston North End, with the Teessiders 10/1 to repeat the 3-0 scoreline from their Terriers triumph.
