Many Coventry fans may not be particularly inspired by the proposed appointment of Kevin Blackwell as their new boss, but he is the favourite to be the permanent successor to Aidy Boothroyd.

Although he has taken both Leeds and Sheffield United to Championship play-off finals in the past, Blackwell’s brand of football is not always the most appreciated.

The Blades fans in particular were not behind his long ball style and the fact he lost the support of the crowd was one of the reasons for his departure from Bramall Lane in the early stages of the season.

However, as things stand Coventry supporters are liable to accept any style of football if it means that they manage to secure their position in the Championship.

A run of one win in 18 league games has resulted in Coventry spiralling down the table and they are now fifth from bottom.

Blackwell is 6/4 in the Coventry betting to be named their next manager and also may get the nod because he has shown an ability in the past to achieve decent results on a shoestring budget.

However, there are a hatful of other names touted as possible replacements for Boothroyd at the Ricoh Arena, with current caretaker boss Andy Thorn also leading the contenders.

Thorn’s knowledge of the club may be an advantage to his prospects, but the fact he was in charge for Coventry’s latest defeat to bottom club Preston may hinder rather than support his chances.

It is 2/1 in the football betting that Thorn takes over at Coventry on a permanent basis.

Chris Hughton and Roberto Di Matteo have both gained Premier League managerial experience this season and this could easily work in their favours.

Hughton is 5/1 to be named next Coventry manager, while Di Matteo is priced at 7/1.

A £20 stake on Alan Curbishley being named next permanent Coventry manager would return £280. New customers can sign up here to take advantage of free bets totalling up to £60.
