With Huddersfield sitting in fourth position in League One, just four points from an automatic promotion spot, Lee Clark’s sacking and subsequent instalment as 4/6 favourite for the Leeds job has come as somewhat of a shock.

Clark is one of the most highly-rated young managers currently in the game, and after being strongly linked with the vacant managerial position at Leicester earlier in the season, the former Newcastle player now finds himself firmly in the frame for both the Leeds job, and the hotseat at Premier League Wolves.

It would seem to make geographical sense for Clark to take the position at Yorkshire outfit Leeds, given its close proximity to Huddersfield, though it is unclear as of yet whether or not he will be offered the job, despite him leaping ahead of second-favourite Mick McCarthy, 11/10, in the Championship betting.

What seems as odd as anything about Clark’s departure from high-flying Town, is the fact that his entire Terriers backroom team have also had their contracts terminated.

Those strange circumstances would appear to indicate that an offer may have already been made for their services, or a deal arranged, but Huddersfield chairman Dean Hoyle is adamant that the decision was made purely with regards to their performance of late at the Galpharm Stadium.

He told the official club website: “This was a very difficult decision; one not taken lightly or in response to one result. Lee and his coaching staff have put their all into the job over the past three seasons and have made a huge contribution to the club.

“However with 16 matches to go we still have an opportunity to achieve promotion and we have made this change with this in mind.”

Clark’s pedigree at a higher level remains to be seen, but the credentials he demonstrated during his Huddersfield tenure would appear to make him a leading candidate for the managerial role at Leeds.
