A 45th minute goal from Billy Sharp helped one Ladbrokes customer land £21,000 from a £2 stake by half-time in Saturday’s 3pm matches.

The plucky online punter picked eight teams to be winning their games by the halfway stage.

But with half-time whistles being blown around the country, our mystery bettor looked to be in trouble, with only seven of his eight selections winning.

Thankfully for our eight-fold hero, Billy Sharp popped up at the back post at Bramall Lane to give Sheffield United the lead against Wigan Athletic and save the bet.

Elsewhere, half-time leads for Nottingham Forest, Peterborough United, Colchester United, Wrexham, AFC Fylde, Newport County and Sunderland ensured the punter pocketed a whopping £21,224.72.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “What a weekend our plucky punter had. Sheffield United’s Billy Sharp played a huge part in this success story but full credit goes to the brains behind this bet!”
