Expectant Real Madrid fans descended on the the Santiago Bernabeu as their side entertained Schalke in their Champions League round-of-16 second leg looking for their heroes to end a two-game unbeaten run.

Things didn’t quite go to plan. Los Blancos lost 3-4 and the fans waved white hankies, a traditional show of disgust, at the players at the final whistle.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to a night where the defending champions lost their aura:

Real Madrid fan page @SocialRMadrid could be equally to blame for the defeat, tempting fate with this gem before kickoff:

The Schalke fans were enjoying their away-day on the way to the ground:

The best defence in the competition was expected to flex their muscle at the back once again:

Then Schalke took the lead:

Los Blancos looked off the pace all over the field, as noted by @RMadridNation:

Luckily, the men in white had a certain Cristiano Ronaldo in their side to drag them through the tough times. The former Man United man levelling things up with a header:

Former Los Blancos striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar put Schalke back in front, thanks to some suspect goalkeeping from Iker Casillas:

Without Sergio Ramos in the side, Madrid looked like conceding with every Schalke attack. @Troll__Football summed up the situation in typical style:

Perhaps Jose Mourinho, who dropped Casillas when Madrid manager, was feeling justified sat in London?

Ronaldo and Benzema goals either side of half time gave Madrid the lead, but Champions League debutant Leroy Sane did this to level it up again:

People wondered if a Man Utd U21 would be able to notch against such a defensive rabble:

When Huntelaar gave Schalke the lead for a third time, Madrid were one more goal away from elimination. They face Barcelona a week on Saturday:

In the end Madrid scraped through, but their Champions League defence looks far from menacing, as a flurry of tweets pointed out:
