Sampaoli’s Sevilla primed for more than Europa League success

Sevilla to top Champions League Group H

Over the past three seasons, Sevilla have become synonymous with Europa League success.

Their trio of consecutive triumphs in that competition is an achievement even more striking when the club’s constant turnover of players is considered. But this term they look set to make steps even beyond that.

In the first campaign with former Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli at the helm Los Rojiblancos are thriving like never before.

Sat in third place in La Liga having lost just once in the opening eight matches, Sevilla are just one point off top spot and ahead of Barcelona.

In the Champions League, Sampaoli’s men are unbeaten at the halfway point in Group H. They gave themselves a four-point cushion over third and fourth place by beating Dinamo Zagreb on the road last time out.

Sharing the mini-league with them is Juventus, and the Spaniards are matching the Italian giants every step of the way to sit level on seven points. They are also yet to concede a goal.

With the Old Lady still to visit Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, where Sevilla have won five straight matches in all competitions, a palpable chance to top the group lays before them.

We offer 7/4 that the Spaniards manage the feat. Doing so would be the perfect setup for the club’s first ever trip beyond the round-of-16 in the competition.

A pedigree of progressing through the knockout stages of Uefa’s second-tier competition – where Champions League-calibre sides often congregate – makes them a threat in the latter stages.

Should they get that far, the 50/1 about them winning the competition will have vanished, so get on now. You have been warned.
