Real Madrid have been eliminated from the Champions League at the last-16 stage in each of the last six seasons, but this sequence is expected to end as they prepare to finally get the better of their chief bogey team Lyon.

Match Odds

With the tie locked at 1-1 after the first leg in France, many people will expect Real Madrid to move into the quarter finals of the Champions League.

Real Madrid’s betting odds are 4/11 to beat Lyon, while a goalless draw would also send them through on away goals and it is 1/6 that they qualify.

However, Lyon have proved a nemesis to Real Madrid in the past three seasons, facing them in the Champions League in each campaign and leaving the Bernabeu with three score draws, while remaining unbeaten in all seven showdowns.

The 1-1 at the Bernabeu last season was enough to knock Real Madrid out of the second round of the competition and it is 7/2 that they eliminate them again.

Lyon are also 8/1 to beat Real Madrid, while a fourth successive draw between the pair at the Bernabeu is priced at 7/2.

However, on the six previous occasions that Lyon have drawn the opening game of a two-legged encounter at home, they have never qualified for the next round, while the fact that Michel Bastos is suspended will not help their cause.

First Goalscorer

Karim Benzema is currently Real Madrid’s form player and scored the goal in the opening leg in Lyon.

Benzema is 7/2 to be the first goalscorer again and will not have any remorse for finding the target again against his former club.

Although Lyon need to score to qualify, there is every chance that their first aim will be to keep things tight in the early stages and then gradually become more attacking as the game enters its latter stages.

Set plays may be their best hope of a goal and Pape Diakhate therefore could be overpriced at 66/1 to break the deadlock.

A £25 stake on the scorecast of Real Madrid beating Lyon 2-0 and Benzema scoring first would return £400. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
