It feels like the football transfer rumour which has rumbled on longer than the debate over the proposed high speed rail link HS2, but according to one newspaper Diego Costa is finally set for a Chelsea switch from Atletico Madrid.
The Metro are reporting that a £50m fee between the two Champions League semi-final opponents has set the wheels in motion for a June 30th transfer completion date for the Spanish striker.
In terms of timing, the leak couldn’t be more calculated from a Chelsea perspective, who face Atletico in just over a week’s time in the first leg of their last-four European Cup clash.
That’s a game the current La Liga leaders are warm 21/10 favourites to win at the Vincente Calderon, and it’s having a striker of Costa’s calibre in their ranks which goes some way to making them so.
Costa’s latest Atleti strike in a 2-0 win over Getafe was his 33rd goal in all competitions and for some time now Jose Mourinho has been convinced that the Brazilian-born centre-forward is the right man to replace his current contingent of misfiring front men.
At 25, Costa is at the peak of his goal-plundering powers and given that Gareth Bale was sold to Real Madrid for a mind-boggling world record fee of £86m, the reported £50m to seal the striker’s signature could be viewed as a bargain.
But the problem for Atleti and manager Diego Simeone is that despite their stellar campaign to date which could conceivably end in a glorious league and European double, they remain a selling club.
It does bring into question whether or not the likes of goalkeeper on-loan Thibaut Courtois or Fernando Torres will be used as further makeweights in the proposed deal as has been speculated before.
