Roma coach Claudio Ranieri knows his side must improve from their 5-1 defeat to Cagliari last weekend if they are to progress in the Champions League.
Roma have started the Italian Serie A season poorly with a 0-0 draw with newly-promoted Cesena and last Sunday’s 5-1 drubbing against Cagliari.
Ranieri was at a loss to explain the Cagliari defeat and despite the return of Francesco Totti and Adriano, Ranieri will be without John Arne Riise, Philippe Mexes, Rodrigo Taddei, Mirko Vucinic and Stefano Okaka as they look to upset last year’s finalists.
Bayern are 4/6 to win at home but they too have started their league season slowly and will be without Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben for their toughest home fixture.
Robben was key to Bayern last season, scoring 23 goals in 37 matches but Ivica Olic scored seven in the Champions League and he is 11/2 to score first.
Bayern have a poor winning record against Italian teams, they’ve won just five of the 19 encounters they’ve contested, but have only lost the one time in the Champions League at the Allianz Arena and a draw is available at 5/2.
CFR 1907 Cluj-Napoca v Basle
The two underdogs in Group E will both be hoping to apply some early pressure to the top seeds in a bid to qualify for the second round.
Both sides enter the competition as current league and cup champions in their respective countries, but neither side has fared well in previous Champions League campaigns.
Basel, 11/5 to win away in Romania, managed just one point from their 2008/09 Champions League group whilst Cluj managed just the four points from their group, but that did include a win over 2010/11 opponents Roma.
The Romanian side are 5/4 because of their home advantage and the confidence the local support will give them should see them win.
Bayern are 4/7 favourites to top Group E. See the full UEFA Champions League betting market here.
