Florian Mayer is currently the highest-seeded player to have fallen at the first hurdle in the men’s draw at the US Open, but Stanislas Wawrinka looks set to take this mantle.

The number 18 seed is expected to be upset by Sergiy Stakhovsky and this is one of seven results picked as part of our 56/1 US Open accumulator.

Despite his relatively lofty status, Wawrinka has only made it beyond the second round once in the last three years at Flushing Meadows.

Stakhovsky won five matches in his preparation tournament ahead of the US Open before narrowly going down to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and he triumphed in his only previous meeting with Wawrinka.

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Thomas Bellucci may be slightly lower in the ATP rankings than opponent Pablo Andujar, but he has won in all three of their career meetings.

Andujar has also never won a game in his two previous visits to the US Open.

Fabio Fognini should also discard of Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who is currently struggling on a six-match losing streak.

Over to the women and Britain’s Johanna Konta is in action against Hungarian teenager Timea Babos.

As well as being close to 150 places higher in the WTA rankings, Babos has been in decent hard-court form lately, pushing the likes of Angelique Kerber, Andrea Petkovic and Mona Barthel to a final set.

She should easily have too much for Konta.

Roberta Vinci has won both career meetings with Urszula Radwanska, while the younger sister of world number two Agnieszka is also struggling with a shoulder problem.

Furthermore, Vinci will be full of confidence after winning the warm-up event for the US Open in Dallas, beating the likes of Jelena Jankovic en route.

Yaroslava Shvedova gave Serena Williams something to think about at Wimbledon and can see off Vania King, while Akgul Amanmuradova can breeze past German qualifier Tatjana Malek.

US Open selections

Thomaz Bellucci to beat Pablo Andujar @ 3/10
Timea Babos to beat Johanna Konta @ 4/11
Roberta Vinci to beat Urszula Radwanska @ 4/9
Yaroslava Shvedova to beat Vania King @ 8/15
Fabio Fognini to beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin @ 4/6
Akgul Amanmuradova to beat Tatjana Malek @ 10/11
Sergiy Stakhovsky to beat Stanislas Wawrinka @ 7/2
