Murray must master fans favourite if he is to progress in New York
Somdev Devvarman may be Indian but he has been adopted by the American public
Andy Murray opens his US Open campaign tonight and the bookmakers believe the Brit will have no troubles as he looks to advance.
Murray is the 1/66 favourite to win tonight but he will face a hostile American crowd who will be cheering on their adopted son, Somdev Devvarman.
Devvarman was born in Guwahati, India but the 26-year-old currently resides in Charlottesville, Virginia and is the training partner of Andy Roddick.
The laid-back character has become a popular person around Flushing Meadows this week and he will have plenty of support in his corner in tonight’s match with Murray.
Devvarman is 12/1 to upset Murray and it would be some upset, but while their may be 60 places separating the two players in the rankings, Murray will have to be weary of the troubles that Devvarman can bring.
A place in the second round and a tie against Robin Haase or Rui Machado awaits the winner of Murray’s match with Somedev, and both players will be eager to continue their run at Flushing Meadows.
Murray is 2/9 to win 3-0 but because this is the first round of the US Open and with the extra pressure that comes with opening matches in a Grand Slam, punters may be better off looking at the 4/1 for Murray to win 3-1.
The handicap betting makes Devvarman the favourite with a +9.5 game start at 8/11, and a 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 win for Murray would see Devvarman triumph under the handicap.
With the match potentially going four sets, – it’s 4/1 to see four sets tonight – Devvarman looks a strong bet with the handicap and much more enticing thanMurray’s 1/66 to win.
Devvarman is 3/1 to win at least one set and it’s 12/5 that there will be a tiebreak in the match and while Murray is an unattractive betting proposition at 1/66, there are plenty of bets to explore in tonight’s betting market.
