When you’re stood on the 18th green with a two-foot putt for a FedEx Cup win and a $10m purse, the last thing you’re thinking about is next week’s Ryder Cup.

But USA captain Corey Pavin’s focus was most definitely on the Ryder Cup as Jim Furyk holed the put that won him The Tour Championship, leaving Pavin’s US team with four of the world’s top five players – USA are 7/4 to win the Ryder Cup.

Furyk’s win at The Tour Championship on Sunday evening meant he climbed one spot up to fifth in the world rankings, pushing European Ryder Cup opponent Martin Kaymer down to sixth.

Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood and Steve Stricker join Furyk in the top five, but despite what the world rankings suggest, off paper the American team are struggling to find form.

Woods’ year has been mediocre and Mickelson is struggling to cope with the pressure to overtake Tiger as world number one, leaving Stricker and Furyk the only form Americans from the top five.

Both Stricker and Furyk are consistently strong every season and are 6/1 and 7/1 to be the USA top point scorer.

With just Mickelson, 5/1, and Woods, 4/1, ahead of them in the betting, you could consider them the favourites.

Sticker is playing his second Ryder Cup and has only mustered 0.5 points from three matches, and Furyk has just 9.5 points from 24 matches so it may be worth looking elsewhere for the US top points scorer.

Hunter Mahan has 3.5 points from five games and is a huge price at 10/1 to be the top US point scorer.

Woods is 4/5 to be the top USA wildcard pick. See the full 2010 Ryder Cup betting odds market here.
