Suarez swoops to send Uruguay through to last eight

Uruguay have reached their first World Cup quarter-final since 1966 after Luis Suarez inspired them to a 2-1 win against South Korea.

Suarez’s wonderful, curling strike clinched victory with ten minutes to play, and the South Americans can now look forward to a last eight tie with the USA or Ghana, who face each other tonight at 7.30pm.

Suarez gave Uruguay a first half lead when he converted Diego Forlan’s cross, which should have been dealt with by Jung Sung-Ryong in the South Korean goal.

Lee Chung-Yong nodded in a 66th minute equalising goal after Uruguay were unable to clear the ball from a free-kick.

But Suarez’s late goal sealed for Uruguay what was ultimately a deserved victory.

South Korea had almost taken the lead inside five minutes as Park Chu-Young’s whipped free-kick hit the outside of the post.

Suarez also went close with a header and was adjudged to be offside when clean through on goal.

Chu-Young blasted narrowly over and Park Ji-Sung had a header saved as South Korea pressed their South American opponents in the second half.

Chu-Young had a glorious chance to equalise with just a couple of minutes left but he hit his scuffed shot straight at Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.
