After a relatively painless but protracted process, Joe Allen’s transfer from Swansea City to Liverpool finally done – and it could prove to be Brendan Rodgers’ best move so far.

Allen was at Anfield on Thursday night to watch the Reds’ 3-0 Europa League win over FC Gomel and he should go straight into the Liverpool squad for their first Premier League game against West Bromwich Albion.

The deal is expected the net the Swans around £15m and would smash their best previous sum received for a player which was the £2million they got off Wigan Athletic in 2009 for Jason Scotland.

While it’s undoubtedly a significant amount of money for Swansea, Liverpool may still be the ones getting the better deal out of the transfer.

Obviously, when buying a player who is just 22-years-old, much of their value is based on potential – but Allen has already shown he has the ability to match his inflated price tag.

He’s been an integral part of Swansea’s passing style over the past few seasons and showed last season that he has the class to perform consistently in the Premier League.

Having the Welsh international line up alongside the likes of Steven Gerrard and Lucas should give the Reds a bit of extra poise in the middle of the park – something they’ve been lacking since the departure of the brilliant Xabi Alonso.

He’ll keep the ball moving and give Gerrard plenty of quick ball in good areas of the pitch as well as doing his fair share of defensive work. According to Opta, only two players (Yohan Cabaye and Moussa Dembele) made more tackles than Allen last season.

If Liverpool are to adopt a more possession-based style of football then Allen’s signing is a huge step in the right direction and may make the Reds a very decent bet at 19/10 to finish in the top four.
