Fulham’s top assets attract interest from Liverpool and Man United
Martin Jol is facing a fight to retain Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele
It has already been a summer of upheaval for Fulham with captain Danny Murphy, Andy Johnson and loan star Pavel Pogrebnyak departing and reports indicate that arguably their two best players could also leave Craven Cottage.
Clint Dempsey’s future has been the subject of much speculation over the last week since an American website affiliated with Liverpool’s owners claimed that he had joined the club, with boss Brendan Rodgers later confirming his interest.
Fulham were furious at being forced to deny rumours that they had done nothing to encourage and are likely as dismayed by the latest suggestion, which is that Dempsey will head to Anfield with Charlie Adam moving in the opposite direction.
After a series of increasingly impressive campaigns since arriving at Fulham in 2007, Dempsey’s reputation rocketed last season courtesy of 23 goals in all competitions.
The versatile American admitted in May that he would be tempted to step up if the opportunity arose in the window, although he noted that playing in the Champions League was his aspiration. Liverpool are 19/10 for a top-four finish
Cottagers team-mate Moussa Dembele, who experienced that level of football briefly while at AZ Alkmaar, might be presented with a chance to return to Europe’s top stage though having emerged as an alleged Manchester United target.
The Belgian playmaker shares Dempsey’s adaptability and has excelled in a number of roles during his two years in west London to ensure that, were Fulham to sell, they could expect a significant increase on their £5 million investment.
The 2011/12 Premier League runners-up are showing plenty of ambition right now as they try to build a squad capable of taking the title back from neighbours Manchester City at the first attempt, a prospect rated at 5/2.
They have signed Shinji Kagawa and Crewe youngster Nick Powell, been confirmed as bidders for Robin van Persie (who is 5/4 to go there) and linked with Brazilian midfielder Lucas Moura.
