It may only be a small difference, but punters fancying Chelsea to finish the season as the top London club in the Premier League can make more profit by backing them to effectively finish third.

The price for Chelsea to gain the London bragging rights is 1/3 and given the latest troubles of Andre-Villas Boas, the only competition in this market seems to be from a new defensively-strong Arsenal.

However, punters expecting Chelsea to finish above Arsenal may be better taking the 2/5 in the betting market without Manchester City and Manchester United.

It seems extremely unlikely that the top two in the final standings will not be the Manchester heavyweights and so the rest are effectively battling for third.

Taking out any London clubs, the only Premier League teams arguably capable of competing for a Champions League spot are Liverpool, Newcastle and Everton.

Brendan Rodgers is having some early difficulty converting the Liverpool squad to his brand of passing football and there is a decent chance that it will take another few months before progression is seen.

Newcastle’s squad has hardly changed over the summer and there is little reason to believe that they can improve on the fifth position they achieved last season.

Everton have started better than normal this season, but whether they have the talent in their squad to remain in contention over 38 games remains to be seen.

Therefore, it seems to be between the three London clubs for third.

Tottenham are in a transitional period similar to Liverpool and so cannot be considered realistic contenders, meaning that it looks between Chelsea and Arsenal to finish behind Manchester City and Manchester United.

So with Chelsea being a better price here than to be top London club, this has to be considered the better betting proposition.
