AC Milan’s lack of options in the centre of their defence could prove a weakness if they are to sustain their title challenge in Serie A, but they are considering strengthening this department in January with a move for Vincent Kompany.

The form of Alessandro Nesta and Thiago Silva at the heart of the Milan back four is a key reason for them topping the Serie A pile, as they have conceded just 13 goals in their 17 games so far.

This has helped them establish a three-point lead at the top of the table and Milan’s betting odds are now 4/5 to be crowned Serie A champions at the end of the campaign.

Top quality cover in defence would help bolster their chances further and Milan coach Massimillano Allegri has identified Manchester City’s Kompany as a leading target.

Despite all of Manchester City’s superstars, Kompany has proved one of their stand-out performers of the season so far, forming a solid central defensive partnership with Kolo Toure.

Roberto Mancini will be reluctant to lose the Belgian, particularly as he will want to avoid selling his best players if Manchester City are to mount a title challenge of their own.

One sticking point for Milan is that they may struggle to match Kompany’s wages, after he signed a big-money, five-year bumper deal at Eastlands last October.

Milan may also have difficulty affording a transfer fee, but would be willing to offer some of their own players up in part exchange, including Ronaldinho.

Kompany’s immediate concerns will be helping Manchester City claim victory in their Boxing Day fixture away at Newcastle.

Manchester City’s betting odds are 11/10 to beat Newcastle, with the hosts priced at 12/5 to hand Mancini’s men their second successive defeat.

A £10 bet on Manchester City beating Newcastle 3-1 could lead to a return of £140. New Ladbrokes customers can sign up here for a free £10 bet.
