Usual suspects head betting to take over from Jewell at Ipswich

Ipswich owner Marcus Evans has a decision to make when appointing the successor to Paul Jewell and the betting suggests that he will plump for an older head with a greater amount of experience and a more proven track record.

Alan Curbishley is never far from the head of the betting when a new vacancy becomes available and Ipswich is no exception to the norm as he is the early 2/1 favourite.

However, he has been out of the game since 2008 and the consensus is that he is still holding out for a Premier League position.

Mick McCarthy has twice overseen promotions from the Championship to the Premier League and since he parted ways with Wolves, he is another whose name is regularly thrown into the hat for a club needing a new manager.

He is 4/1 to take over the reins at Ipswich.

It could be argued that Ipswich adopted this recruitment strategy when appointing Jewell, which has clearly backfired as they sit bottom of the Championship after 12 games of the campaign.

Therefore, with money tight at Portman Road, the better option may be to seek a talented manager from the lower leagues that has witnessed some success and is dynamic in his ways.

Paolo Di Canio is a possible candidate, but his hot-headed nature may give Evans concerns, especially given the relationship he endured with Roy Keane previously.

Karl Robinson is another candidate, given successive ventures into the League One play-offs with the MK Dons.

Attempting to lure former players with ties to the club has been a common ploy of Championship clubs of late, especially with Blackburn interested in Tim Sherwood and Billy McKinley.

Matt Holland looked for roles in the media after ending his playing career, but given that he made over 250 appearances for Ipswich, he would be a fan favourite.

Holland is 25/1 to be handed his first managerial post at Ipswich.
