England 11/8 to win in Sydney and take Ashes series 3-1
Andrew Strauss has demanded England go for victory in the fifth Test
Despite already ensuring that the Ashes are retained, Andrew Strauss has still demanded that England do all in their power to win the final Test in Sydney.
England now lead the series 2-1 after a dominating display in all departments in Melbourne to win by an innings and 157 runs and are the favourites in the betting odds at 11/8 to win the fifth Test, which begins on January 3rd.
Despite being the first England team to manage to regain the trophy since 1987, Strauss now has the chance to end another long-standing disappointing run and captain a side to claim three Test victories in an Ashes series in Australia for the first time since 1979.
Strauss told the BBC: “It would be a damp squib if we didn’t go on and win in Sydney. We are going to enjoy today, but it’s back on the horse again in Sydney and hopefully we can make it 3-1.”
Middle-order batsman Ian Bell echoed the comments of his captain and highlighted that England had not come to draw the series despite this being all they needed to regain the Ashes, while also indicating the importance of ending the series on a high.
Unfortunately, a close finish is one thing that is unlikely to be witnessed at Sydney based on the results of the last four Ashes Tests to be played at the ground.
The last four tests have all been won relatively heavily and on three of these occasions it has been England who have been put to the sword.
However, England did run out victors by 225 runs in 2003 thanks to centuries by Mark Butcher and Michael Vaughan and it should be these memories that are recounted if Strauss is to lead England to a 3-1 series win.
