Kevin Painter kicks off the Grand Slam of Darts at Wolverhampton Civic Hall tonight, and looks tempting at 5/6 to overcome Mark Winstanley.
Painter, the PDC Players Championship winner last year, counts a run to the European Championship quarter-final amongst his achievements in 2012, as well as a 7th place Premier League finish.
In Winstanley he meets a player whose PDC career is in its infancy, though the Doncaster man was a beaten BDO World Championship final last year.
That said, Painter’s experience should tell in this clash, and the Artist appears primed to justify 5/6 odds here.
Mervyn King is our next selection at 8/15, as he aims to follow up his run to the World Grand Prix final earlier this year with a tilt at this championship.
In King’s way stands one of the tournament’s youngest players, Jan Dekker, who looks unlikely to offer much resistance to his counterpart.
Dekker has competed in only one PDC event in the past, the 2011 renewal of this tournament, and the 22-year-old failed to advance past the group stage then.
Another youngster should be backed to enjoy success tonight though, in the form of Michael van Gerwen, a 4/11 hope to get the better of Steve Beaton.
Just 23, van Gerwen was majestic en route to claiming the 2012 World Grand Prix title, and will be feared at this tournament too.
In Beaton he faces stiff competition, and a man who reached the semi-final of this event only two years ago.
However, preference should lie with van Gerwen, as he aims to continue his ascension and further build a reputation as the fastest-rising star in world darts.
And we take Simon Whitlock to round off our accumulator, as a 1/4 shot to condemn James Hubbard to defeat.
Whitlock claimed a maiden major PDC title earlier this year, when landing the European Championship, and the Wizard will be hungry for more success at Wolverhampton this weekend.
Experience could again count for much in this tie, and a Whitlock victory should be the expected outcome.
An accumulator on the four suggested selections pays close to 4/1.
