Hashim Amla looks the value at 12/1 in the Cricket World Cup betting to end the tournament as the top runscorer.

Amla scored 299 runs in South Africa’s six Group B matches to help them progress to the quarter finals as group winners, which was aided by a century against the Netherlands and two other half centuries.

These runs put him in eighth spot in the overall tournament runscorer standings, 64 adrift of Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara, but there should still be plenty of time to make up this deficit.

South Africa are 7/2 second favourites to win the Cricket World Cup and they are largely expected to come through their quarter final with New Zealand.

One thing that does significantly enhance Amla’s chances of being top runscorer is that he opens the batting, ensuring that he not only bats every innings, but gives him maximum time to accumulate his runs.

Meanwhile, unlike other openers including India’s Virender Sehwag and Shane Watson of Australia, Amla’s game is not built around all-out attack at the top of the innings in the hope of securing fast runs.

Amla has shown an ability to bat through an innings in the past and has a decent conversion rate into centuries.

Current leading scorer Sangakkara may also be seen by some as a worthy bet at 11/4, particularly bearing in mind that he already has the runs on the board and Sri Lanka should progress through their quarter final with England.

Of the others currently towards the top of the run standings, Sachin Tendulkar can also never be underestimated.

Tendulkar is the model of consistency and knows what it takes to be a World Cup top runscorer, achieving the feat in both 1996 and 2003.

He is 4/1 in the top runscorer betting, alongside compatriot Sehwag.

A £20 stake on Amla being the top World Cup runscorer would return £240. New customers can sign up here to take advantage of free bets totalling up to £60.
