For all the stick he gets you cannot say that Mike Ashley isn’t backing his managers at Newcastle in the transfer market.

The Toon spent a total of £29m on the trio of Andros Townsend, Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet in January, while Seydou Doumbia is likely to be on a hefty salary during his loan spell.

It could have been even more had West Brom accepted their bid for Saido Berahino, with United reported to have offered a sum in the region of £21m for the striker.

Ashley has stumped up to help get the club out of the relegation mire, and now all the onus is on the manager to turn things around.

Steve McClaren can’t have any complaints now, it’s all down to him and what he does with his team, there will be nowhere to hide.

He’s got all he wanted in terms of funds to bring in new players and results now have to reflect the cash spent.

Sat two points behind Norwich in 18th place in the table, with just one win in their last eight, things have to change if they are to avoid the drop.

They’ve got to win their home games, it is simple as that. When they’ve been on the road, they haven’t been as good.

They’ve picked up the occasional win away from home like they did at Tottenham, but if Spurs had taken their chances in the first half they would have been out of sight, and the Magpies were lucky they didn’t.

In front of their own fans, there’s ample opportunity to bag three points starting with this weekend’s game against West Brom.

Win and they could move out of the relegation zone again, as well as potentially dragging the Baggies into the mix.

But fail to pick up three points at St James’s Park and McClaren will have no excuses if the fans get restless.
