Big-priced winners could make an enjoyable Cheltenham Festival even more special and there are particular races where it tends to pay to ignore the favourites.

The Byrne Group Plate is the obvious race to focus on an outsider as a Cheltenham betting tip. There were 11 successive winners at odds of at least 10/1 until favourite backers were rewarded with Salut Flo’s triumph last year. Business may resume as normal this year.

Meanwhile, the last nine winners of the Pertemps Final have all been sent off at double-figure prices, which is a statistic that goes against leading fancy Sam Winner.

At the opposite end of the scale, the favourite has triumphed in each of the last two years in the National Hunt Chase, while all of the last 12 winners of the Cheltenham Gold Cup had come from the first three in the betting.
